Here comes Santa Claus, here comes Santa Claus, right down Santa Claus Lane…
Very familiar line of an old children’s Christmas song. How it came out of history and found it’s home in the House of God is beyond me. Along with many other perennial old favorites, like weeds in a beautiful garden these things just keep cropping up where they do not belong. I realize that people wax emotional over these wonderful old traditional songs and become misty eyed at the prospect of the little children singing them for the Christmas Church Program. However, I have found a glaring problem over the years in my walk with Jesus and my studies of Gods’ Word, the BIBLE. The Bible is very plain. The Words are blunt, direct, and to the point.
1st John 1:21 NIV Bible
I do not write to you because you do not know the truth, but because you do know it and because no lie comes from the truth.
No lie is of the Truth. Plain, blunt, and simple. I have so wrestled with the Truth of God’s Word in theory and practice over the years . Are God’s People supposed to lie? Does lying belong in the House of God? The answers to these two questions are an emphatic and resounding NO!
If this then is the case and we know lying is wrong, why then do we continue to make and practice lies in the Name of Jesus in the very House of God and think it is OK? God Himself declares in His Own Word, “The people draw near to Me with their lips but their heart is far from Me”. Santa Claus and all his trappings, the three wise men at the manger, Jesus shivering in a cold barn on a winters night, Christmas on December 25th, and everything that goes along with it are lies. It is in the songs that are sung, it is taught, it is preached, it is believed, and it is not in the Bible.
Ask almost any Christian and they will tell you they are pretty sure Jesus was not born on December 25th. Extra-Biblical research will back this thinking up. The weather was nasty, no sheep would be in the fields at night, and what emperor in his right mind would have people travel by foot during the worst weather of the year? The emperor wants his money, not a bunch of sick and dead constituents. On top of that neither the Bible, nor Jesus set any standard for celebrating a holiday(?) known as Christmas. Is not Christmas Christ Mass? If His birth is being celebrated why is it called Christ Mass and is linked to His death rather than His Life?
Let’s consider the Santa Claus story for a moment. He is not real. How many youngster have had their hearts broken when they’ve discovered Santa is not real, and their parents, who are supposed to love and protect them, have been lying to and deceiving them at the most impressionable tender part of their young lives? I know some adults who still have issues with this deception played upon them by their own parents. Is this how Christian parents are supposed to train up their children in the Lord? I’m pretty sure Jesus is not good with parents lying to and deceiving their children in His Name or in the name of love.
Let’s take Old Saint Nick out of the equation for a moment. If Old Nick isn’t the topic of conversation do you still lie to your children about other things? How about your co-workers perhaps, or your spouse? Or God Himself for that matter. I believe the point is probably well made by now, yes?
One more thing. Do you suppose Jesus wants people to go into debt because of His birthday? People go money spending crazy at Christmas time. Black Friday has been moved to Black Thursday. Come on. Wake up! This is not what Jesus wants people to do. Tradition? Love? Really? This is not how one worships or honours God or Jesus with their finances. No, it’s how people make themselves miserable in the name of Christmas at the end of the year. It’s like being money drunk, then waking up on December 26th with a horrible financial hangover that lasts for the rest of the year, or at least until the Christmas Spirit grabs you again about next October…
